KU faculty recital features sacred solos

Forrest Pierce, Kansas University assistant professor of composition, will present a faculty recital titled “Sacred Solos” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vt.

The works on the concert include both meditative and virtuosic solo pieces written in the last decade, inspired by the mystical landscape of the individual’s relationship to the divine. The program includes “Ship on the Void,” a blistering trance-work for piano inspired by a fragment of poetry by the Sufi Mystic Jalal-ad-Din Rumi, “House on Fire,” a flute showpiece drawn from the parable of the White Path of Pure Land Buddhism, and “Solace,” a work for pizzicato cello which, after the poetry of Robert Herrick, depicts music’s ability to soothe and comfort. Other works draw inspiration from biblical, American Indian and Vedantic sources.

This event is free and open to the public.
