Activities mark Free State’s 10 years

Free State High School continues celebrating its 10-year anniversary this week with a variety of activities.

“We hope that kids partake in those activities and that kids feel they are part of their school,” said Jane Rock, Student Council sponsor. “There’s so much going on that everyone has something to be part of in the next few weeks.”

This week’s events started Monday with the Principal’s Mark of Excellence Awards, which recognized student leadership and achievement.

Tuesday, Student Council representatives provided guided school tours for community members.

Starting at 6 p.m. today, a “Spring Fling BBQ” is planned for students and staff out by the Firebird, weather permitting.

Thursday’s major activity is a community outreach morning project called “The Great Green Help,” featuring student volunteers from the junior class.

For that activity, juniors will perform spring cleanup and landscaping community service projects at South Park, the Indoor Aquatic Center, Lawrence Memorial Hospital, Lawrence Humane Society, Hidden Valley Girl Scout Camp, Martin Park and several elementary schools.

Every student group will be accompanied by parents and Lawrence Education Achievement Partners volunteers.

Free State’s Booster Club provides lunch for the volunteers. Family and Consumer Science classes will prepare and serve the lunch.

Friday’s main activity, the Night of Amal International Show, is from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the school’s auditorium.
