Weseman to discuss bomb threats

Bottom line

Superintendent Randy Weseman will report about the district’s response to the bomb threats Thursday in Douglas County.

Background

Lawrence public school officials were notified shortly before school started Thursday that someone had made bomb threats against an unspecified school in Douglas County.

Schools officials responded by placing buildings in a “semi-lockdown” mode, where entries and exits were closely monitored.

District officials kept the news media informed throughout the day of the status of the threats. And 3,815 students, or about 37 percent of the school district’s 10,300 students, were checked out early by their parents as a precaution.

However, Weseman found there were gaps in getting information out to all parents. So he plans to study other ways to inform parents, including automated telephone messages and through e-mail subscribers’ list.
