Man drowns as he attempts to run from casino security
Kansas City, Mo. ? A man who was fleeing from casino security drowned early Saturday after he leapt over a railing and into the water that surrounds the Isle of Capri, authorities said.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said the man, identified as Anthony D. Swopes, 21, of Kansas City, fled while being questioned about his identification.
Sgt. Dan Green said the picture on the card didn’t look like Swopes. A check of the card, which later was determined to belong to Swopes, revealed an outstanding bench warrant.
Swopes ran through the casino and out the exit doors after troopers asked him to accompany them to the patrol office to confirm his identification and the outstanding warrant, the patrol said.
Police were called about 12:30 a.m., and firefighters recovered the man about 45 minutes later. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
The death was the second of its kind at the casino in recent years.
In July 2005, authorities said, a woman apparently jumped into the Isle of Capri moat and later died.
Police said the woman had spent about $115,000 at the casino, including $300 on the night she died.
She had been convicted of stealing more than $1,800 from a previous job and was scheduled to make her first $75 monthly restitution payment days later.
Moats are common fixtures at Missouri casinos. Casino gambling in the state initially was restricted to floating riverboats. But the state’s constitution was amended to allow riverboat casinos to float in manmade moats as long as the gaming site is no farther than 1,000 feet from the nearest edge of the river’s main channel.
Debra Jenkins, a spokeswoman for the Kansas City casino, said the Missouri Gaming Commission was investigating.
