Two face charges for Mangino check forgeries

According to Lawrence police reports released Tuesday, Kansas University football coach Mark Mangino’s personal checks were stolen and used after a March 30 vehicle burglary.

Mangino’s wife, Mary, reported to police Friday that someone had forged three checks of about $34 each on March 31 and April 1 at Dillons stores at 1015 W. 23rd St. and 3000 W. Sixth St.

Police spokeswoman Kim Murphree said suspects Tyrone Leroy Alexander, 33, Lawrence, and Gary Lynn Smart, 55, Lawrence, were arrested April 1 in connection with several burglaries, including burglary of a vehicle that belonged to the Mangino family. The victims discovered later the checks had been used, Murphree said.

Alexander and Smart face multiple charges related to car burglaries and thefts, and their cases are pending in Douglas County District Court.
