Crimes reported on Kansas University’s Lawrence campus dropped in 2006, continuing a decadelong trend, KU’s Public Safety Office reported Monday.

“I think, overall, we’re a safe campus compared to other schools,” student body vice president Melissa Horen said.

The total number of reports dropped from 770 in 2005 to 737 in 2006.

While crimes in some categories declined, others remained steady or increased in 2006.

Reports of burglaries increased more than 14 percent to 127 in 2006, driven mainly by an increase in the number of reported automobile thefts.

Reports of larceny and thefts rose from 291 in 2005 to 295 in 2006, with more reports of thefts from buildings, vehicles and of vehicle parts.

The number of reported assaults dropped by one from 33 in 2005 to 32 in 2006. Reports of drugs and narcotics dropped nearly 25 percent to 34 last year.

KU Public Safety Capt. Schuyler Bailey attributed the overall trends to the work of the entire campus community.

“Everybody’s on the same page,” he said.

Public Safety Chief Ralph Oliver said educational programs, security cameras and support from university administrators also were factors in the campus’ declining crime statistics.
