No charges filed yet in weekend hit-and-run

Police know who the driver is, but no arrests had been made as of Tuesday in a weekend hit-and-run wreck that killed a 22-year-old Kansas University student.

The wreck happened at 1:09 a.m. Saturday at 13th and Kentucky streets. Pedestrian Ryan Matthew Kanost, a KU student from Manhattan, was crossing the street when he was struck and killed by a silver Toyota Camry that left the scene.

The driver turned himself later in the day, police say, but was released at the end of an interview. Police are awaiting lab results and will forward a finished report to Dist. Atty. Charles Branson’s office, which will review the case for possible criminal charges.

Police have not identified the driver, other than to say he’s a 24-year-old Lawrence man.
