Thunderstorms to roll in this afternoon

Area to get about half an inch of rain

Keep your umbrella handy. Periods of rain are expected today throughout the Lawrence area, says Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

“The better chance for measurable rainfall will come through the afternoon and evening,” Schack said. “I think everyone will pick up about a half of an inch for the afternoon and evening.”

At 7:30 a.m., most of Douglas County was dry, except for a few sprinkles and light showers, Schack said. Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 63 degrees, the humidity was 75 percent and winds were out of the south at 16 mph, gusting to 24 mph.

The average low temperature for this date is 57 degrees. The record low was 35 degrees, set in 1999.

Today’s high will climb to 70 degrees, with south winds 10 to 20 mph, Schack said. The average high temperature for this date is 79 degrees. The record high was 97 degrees, set in 1956.

Schack said the city got some showers about 4 a.m., but only enough to wet the pavement. Lawrence could get a few showers this morning, then have a break, with redeveloping thunderstorms this afternoon, starting about 4 p.m., she said.

Overnight, the temperature will fall to 57 degrees by early Friday morning. Friday’s high will climb to 77 degrees, with southwest to west winds at 8 to 15 mph.

Friday’s skies will be cloudy, with a slight chance for a thunderstorm late Friday night into Saturday morning, Schack said.

“It should not be a big concern for Friday night football,” Schack said.

Saturday’s morning low temperature will be 55 degrees. Saturday’s high will be 71 degrees, she said.
