Draft report to be available soon

Residents in November are expected to get a glimpse of whether the South Lawrence Trafficway is likely to receive necessary federal approval.

Wendall Meyer, assistant division administrator for the Federal Highway Administration, said his department is planning to release a draft version of a report meant to determine whether there is a “feasible and prudent” alternative to the 32nd Street route for completion of the trafficway.

The report, which is called a 4(f) review, will examine whether it is appropriate for the eastern leg of the trafficway to be built through the Baker Wetlands. The review is necessary if state and local road builders want to seek federal funding for the approximately $110 million project. The project could proceed without federal approval if it uses only state funding.

Meyer said his agency plans to make the draft report available for public review in November. He expects to have a public meeting about the document in December. The department would then take public comment and make any needed changes to the document.

The 4(f) review, and a review of an environmental impact statement for the project, are not expected to be finalized until July, Meyer said.
