Record set for eating kolaches

? Lots of people leave the State Fair feeling queasy after gulping down funnel cakes, cotton candy and popcorn.

Patrick Bertoletti of Chicago left the fair in Lincoln feeling just fine – and $1,500 richer – after scarfing 44 kolaches in eight minutes. The 21-year-old’s effort distinguished him as the International Federation of Competitive Eating’s record-holder for kolache eating.

The mohawked Bertoletti, a culinary arts student, is regarded as an up-and-comer in the competitive eating world. He’s ranked No. 4 by the federation.

Among his accomplishments are ingesting 5 3/4 pounds of corned beef and cabbage in 10 minutes, 1 3/4 gallons of vanilla ice cream in eight minutes and 10.8 pounds of key lime pie in eight minutes.

Kolaches are fruit-filled pastries that are beloved in Czech culture.
