Postal Service to unveil Oklahoma stamp

? The U.S. Postal Service plans to reveal Oklahoma’s official centennial postage stamp at a ceremony Friday, but its design remains a closely guarded secret.

For now, only a small group of people – including the man in Perkins who came up with it, members of the Oklahoma Centennial Commission, officials of the U.S. Postal Service and select others – are in on the secret.

The stamp will be unveiled to the public Friday at the National Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City.

The 39-cent, first-class stamp depicts a refreshing and uplifting image of Oklahoma, one that’s unlike what people are used to, said Lee Allan Smith, chairman of projects and events for the state’s Centennial Commission.

“It’s not an Indian. It’s not a cowboy. It’s not a specific place or a location of a city, or waterfalls or mountains,” he said. “It’s just going to … take away the image of dry and dusty. So let your mind wander.”
