¢ Lawrence Police arrested a 52-year-old Lawrence man Saturday afternoon after a disturbance reported by his 17-year-old son in the 1900 block of Tennessee.

Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Fellers said the son had called police to the residence, where he indicated the suspect was yelling and screaming and had walked toward him with a screwdriver in his hand. The 17-year-old felt threatened, Fellers said, and officers arrested the 52-year-old man on a charge of aggravated assault. He remained in the Douglas County Jail Saturday night.

¢ A 55-year-old Ottawa man remained in the Douglas County Jail Saturday night, held on $40,000 bond, on charges of attempted rape, aggravated battery, aggravated sexual battery and aggravated assault.

The man’s bond amount was set Saturday, but charges will not be formally filed until Monday, said Douglas County Dist. Atty. Charles Branson.

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers arrested the man after they found him in the southeastern part of the county Friday afternoon near the alleged victim. Officers have not released other details about the case.

Emergency calls

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical reported the following responses:

¢ Firefighters removed a mattress that had caught fire at 11:45 p.m. Friday from a unit at the Hillview Apartments, 1733 W. 24th St. No one was injured and nothing else inside was damaged, said Capt. Lyle Schwartz, a Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical acting shift commander.

Firefighters ventilated the building because of smoke, which forced apartment residents to stand outside for about an hour, but no one was displaced, Schwartz said. A possible fire cause was not available Saturday.
