Lawrence man killed in I-35 collision

Two people, including a Lawrence man, were killed about 12:30 p.m. Sunday when their cars collided on Interstate 35 in Coffey County, 14 miles east of Emporia.

Killed were Robert D. Crider, 56, of Lawrence, and Ralph L. Westland, 80, of Carlisle, Iowa.

Crider was driving northbound in a 2000 Mercedes when his car was struck by Westland’s Chevy minivan after it crossed the center line in a construction zone, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the minivan, Carol M. Westland, 71, was taken to Coffey County Hospital in Burlington where she was treated and released, according to the hospital.
