Louisville bans smoking in most public buildings

? The city council in the largest city of one of the nation’s top tobacco-producing states voted to extend its smoking ban to cover almost all public buildings.

The only exceptions when the law takes effect in July will be Churchill Downs – home of the Kentucky Derby – and tobacco manufacturing and warehouse facilities.

The measure was approved Thursday by the Metro Council 19-5, with one abstention.

Kentucky produces more burley tobacco, which is used in cigarettes, than any state in the country. In July, Gov. Ernie Fletcher signed an executive order banning smoking in government buildings.

Louisville’s existing ban took effect last November and allows smoking in bars and restaurants that receive less than 75 percent of their revenue from the sale of food served inside the restaurant. The law also allows businesses with separately ventilated smoking rooms to continue allowing patrons to light up.
