Cold front blusters in today

Freeze warning issued for Thursday morning

A Canadian cold front will bluster into Lawrence this afternoon, bringing strong winds and possibly the first freeze of the season by Thursday morning.

“But don’t worry, we have no measurable rain in the forecast,” said Jennifer Schack, 6News meteorologist.

The city got about a half of an inch of rain on Tuesday, Schack said. Mostly clouds, strong winds and colder weather are in store today, Schack said.

Today’s high temperature is expected to happen about noon, reaching about 52 degrees, she said.

Then the cold front moves in, bringing cooler temperatures and winds from the northwest at 15 to 25 mph, Schack said. There’s also a slight chance for rain, she said.

The average high temperature for this date is 73 degrees. The record high was 91 degrees, set in 1975.

At 7:55 a.m., Lawrence Municipal Airport’s temperature was 45 degrees, the humidity was 86 percent and winds were out of the west at 8 mph.

The average low temperature for this date is 50 degrees. The record low was 30 degrees, set in 1932.

Overnight the temperature will drop to 31 degrees, however winds from the northwest at 5 to 12 mph will probably keep a heavy frost from forming, Schack said.

Only a light frost is expected for areas south of Interstate 70, she said.

The National Weather Service has placed the Lawrence area in a freeze warning from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. Thursday . The cold temperatures could damage outdoor plants.

Thursday’s high will reach 49 degrees with west winds at 12-20 mph and partly cloudy skies, Schack said.

Friday will also get off to a frosty start, with the temperature expected to dip to 30 degrees, with another chance for a frost, Schack said. Friday’s high will climb to 59 degrees with mostly sunny skies, she said.
