Make your Mitzvah chic

No, “Mitzvah Chic” cannot nag your child to practice his Torah portion. What the book can do, however, is help you plan a bat or bar mitzvah – it covers everything from understanding the religious intricacies of the event to choosing just the right party favors.

“Mitzvah Chic,” by Gail Anthony Greenberg (Fireside Books, $18), isn’t packed with color photos like some entertaining guides – if you’re searching for inspiration for a great centerpiece, look elsewhere.

Still, the book covers the ceremony and party from beginning to end, even including a Torah summary that highlights themes of each portion and recommends additional resources. A center portion of glossy, color pages offers eight party themes and lays out ideas for decorations, party favors and activities for each. (Some are a bit over-the-top, but if you can look beyond the entire theme to the individual ideas, you’ll find some worth your time.)

The book’s most useful parts are at the end – a planning timeline, a list of questions for a rabbi or cantor, and a guide to what to look for when choosing a venue, deejay and caterer.
