¢ Residents in the 900 block of Rhode Island Street had to evacuate Wednesday afternoon after a piece of heavy machinery struck a gas line about 4 p.m. Lt. John Mathis of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical said firefighters asked residents of one home near the leak to go down to the end of the block as a precaution, but they were allowed back in their home after a few minutes.
