Lawrence public schools Supt. Randy Weseman made a big promise Wednesday.
"I can assure you that a conflict with KU graduation will not occur next year," Weseman said during an online chat on the Journal-World's Web site.
That's in contrast to graduation ceremonies this Sunday, when commencements for Lawrence and Free State high schools and Kansas University and Baker University all fall on the same day.
Weseman said the major factors in avoiding same-day celebrations next year were lining up a venue for the high school graduation ceremonies and making sure that the Project Graduation party could be the evening of graduation.
School district officials have asked KU officials for the use of Memorial Stadium next year on Memorial Day weekend.
"This date avoids most major conflicts and allows Project Graduation on a Sunday," he said. "We have not received an answer from KU to date."
In an interview after the chat, Weseman said parents running Project Graduation wanted it to be on a Sunday.
