John Brown exhibit kicks off this month

— Jacob Lawrence's "John Brown Series" will be on display from May 22 to June 19 at the Holt-Russell Gallery in Parmenter Hall. The official opening reception will be at 2 p.m. May 28.

The series of 22 silkscreens, created by Lawrence from his original paintings, are on loan from the National Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center of Wilberforce, Ohio. Lawrence died in 2000 at age 82.

The exhibit will include two gallery talks: "The Cost of Liberty is Less than the Price of Repression: The Historical and Cultural Context of Jacob Lawrence's John Brown Series," 1 p.m. June 3, and "Commemorative Form: Visual Resolve in Jacob Lawrence's Narrative Work, the John Brown Series," 2 p.m. June 17. Crystal Anderson, assistant professor of American studies at Kansas University, will lead the first program and Walt Bailey, professor of art and director of the Holt-Russell Gallery, will present the second program.

The gallery is open daily from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
