Lawrence artist opens studio for Mother’s Day

Lawrence artist Barbara Solberg has a creative idea to entertain moms this Mother’s Day weekend.

Starting Saturday but continuing today, Solberg is opening her Creative Hand Studio for guests to view new artworks and enter a drawing for a chance to win an original work of art.

Solberg’s pieces include traditional pastel landscapes, modern mixed-media works and multi-layered collages on canvas in freestanding frames, custom-made by local woodworker Terry Miller.

The artist will discuss her work with those who stop by during the open house, which continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today at Solberg’s home, 2504 Westdale Road. The drawing for a free, framed original work by the artist will be at 5 p.m.; one need not be present to win.

Solberg, who has been painting and teaching for more than 30 years, has presented workshops at colleges, art centers and for civic organizations. She has a BFA in painting from Kansas University and has received more than 25 awards for her work. Her resume includes 18 solo shows and 125 juried art fairs and national exhibitions.
