Two teachers in Lawrence get to go to the head of the class.

Lawrence public school officials today announced they have named Debby Cummings, a Schwegler fifth-grade teacher, as 2006 Elementary Teacher of the Year.

Jane Rock, a family and consumer science teacher and department chairperson at Free State High School, has been named the school district's 2006 Secondary Teacher of the Year.

Cummings has taught 26 years at Schwegler School, including two years in sixth grade, two years in second grade and 22 years in fifth grade.

Cummings earned a bachelor's degree at Kansas University.

Rock has taught nine years in Lawrence public schools: one year at West and South junior highs and the rest at Free State.

She is Free State's Student Council faculty sponsor.

Rock previously taught 17 years in Olathe, Cheney and Ottawa. She earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at Kansas State University.

Debby Cummings is more than deserving. She was my 5th grade teacher at Schwegler 13 years ago. She really cares about her students. Mrs. Cummings is one of those teachers you never forget!
