Government, Wittig’s wife settle assets issue

? Attorneys for former Westar Energy Inc. Chief Executive David Wittig and his wife said Wednesday they had reached a settlement with federal prosecutors over how to forfeit some of the couple’s assets.

Jeff Morris, an attorney for the couple, declined to give specifics on the settlement during a hearing to hash out the issue but said he would file a written copy with the court by the end of the week.

In September, a jury convicted David Wittig and former Chief Strategy Officer Douglas Lake of wire fraud, conspiracy, money laundering and circumventing internal controls at the utility. Jurors also ordered the men to hand over millions of dollars in cash, stocks and other property tied to their criminal acts.

Wittig’s wife, Beth Wittig, says some of her husband’s targeted property also belongs to her, and both sides have considered allowing the couple to substitute other property.
