Suspect in shrine bombing captured
Baghdad, Iraq ? Iraq has captured an al-Qaida suspect from Tunisia who allegedly bombed a Shiite shrine earlier this year and set off a spasm of sectarian violence, a top security official said Wednesday.
But the Iraqi mastermind of the Feb. 22 attack on the 1,200-year-old Shiite Golden Dome shrine in Samarra remains at large, national security adviser Mouwafak al-Rubaie said.
Yousri Fakher Mohammed Ali, a Tunisian also known as Abu Qudama, was captured after he was seriously wounded in a clash with security forces north of Baghdad a few days ago, al-Rubaie said.
The national security adviser also identified the fugitive ringleader in the operation as an Iraqi named Haitham Sabah Shaker Mohammed al-Badri.
The shrine in Samarra, 60 miles north of Baghdad, was among Iraq’s most sacred sites for Shiites, drawing pilgrims from around the world. Though no one was injured and no one claimed responsibility, the Shiite community was outraged and the bombing triggered a wave of reprisals against Sunnis that raised fears of civil war.
