TCM airs salute to Billy Wilder

“Billy Wilder Speaks” (7 p.m., TCM) airs on what would have been the director’s 100th birthday. Culled from a series of interviews from German television, “Speaks” offers frank talk (in both English and German) about his life and work.

Wilder came of age in Vienna but left Europe in 1933 after the Nazis’ rise to power. He left behind his mother and other family members who would later die in concentration camps. Wilder’s life as an exile and a dark view of human nature would influence his dramas and comedies alike, including “Double Indemnity” (8:30 p.m., TCM), made in 1944. Wilder would return to the rubble of the Nazi capital Berlin to make the cynical 1948 comedy “A Foreign Affair” (4 a.m. Friday), starring fellow exile Marlene Dietrich. Wilder’s influential films, including “Sunset Blvd.” and “Some Like it Hot,” rank among the best Hollywood movies ever made.
