Not even ‘Everwood’ could last forever

Nina (Stephanie Niznik) and Jake (Scott Wolf) prepare to leave town even though Nina knows Andy (Treat Williams) has purchased an engagement ring on the series finale of “Everwood” (7 p.m., WB).

The well-written series has had its share of soap operas and engaging and even controversial episodes, but it did not attract a big-enough audience to earn a perch at the new CW Network. This has disappointed many longtime fans but proves that nothing on television lasts forever, even “Everwood.”

¢ Given the chance to walk away from a murder conviction, would you plea to a lesser crime if you knew you were innocent? The two-hour documentary “Facing Life: The Retrial of Evan Zimmerman” (8 p.m., A&E) provides one man’s answer.

Zimmerman was convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend, a troubled woman who got married (to another man), arrested and murdered in a single afternoon. Zimmerman’s life sentence was reviewed after the Wisconsin Innocence Project proved that his defense team was slipshod and indifferent. He was told he would have his prison time commuted if he merely pleaded to a lesser manslaughter charge, but Zimmerman opted to fight to clear his name.

“Facing Life” makes the most of its “star.” A former cop and an alcoholic, Zimmerman is a complicated and not entirely sympathetic character. He suffered a stroke in prison and has frequent panic attacks as he prepares for his second trial, leaving many on his defense team wishing he had just taken the easy way out. The documentary reminds us that, for all of the certainty of DNA evidence and other forensic technology, many trials come down to the question of character and other messy intangibles.

¢ In other series-finale news, a winner is crowned on a 90-minute episode of “The Apprentice” (8:30 p.m., NBC). Having lost a great deal of its audience and much of its watercooler appeal, the show offers special guest appearances by Denis Leary, Jason Priestley, Stephen Baldwin and Barenaked Ladies.

¢ Eva Longoria (“Desperate Housewives”) is host on “The 2006 ALMA Awards” (8:30 p.m., ABC), honoring Latino performers in music, film and television. Musical performers include Brian McKnight, Big & Rich, Cowboy Troy and Emilio. Among the many TV actors honored tonight is Jorge Garcia, best known as Hurley from “Lost.”

¢ The new limited series “7 Deadly Hollywood Sins” (9 p.m., E!) looks at the entertainment industry from the vantage point of greed, sloth, envy, gluttony, lust, wrath and pride. Tonight: envy.

¢ The documentary “Plastic Disasters” (9 p.m., HBO) examines the dark side of cosmetic surgery and the nose jobs, tummy tucks and liposuction operations that have resulted in injury, lingering pain and even death. It also looks at the culture of vanity and youth that sustains more than 9 million cosmetic-surgery procedures per year.
