County commissioners to discuss road issues

Douglas County commissioners will take up road improvement issues at their meeting today.

Commissioners will decide whether to solicit bids for improvements to East 1300 Road between North 100 and North 150 roads north of the Franklin County line.

In conjunction with the state’s U.S. Highway 59 construction project, the county agreed to make the improvements because of the proposed closure to North 100 just east of U.S. 59.

East 1300 Road is expected to see increased use.

The improvements include replacing a bridge.

Commissioners also will consider soliciting bids for what is called “hot-in-place” recycling work on 2.2 miles of Douglas County Road 438 and for less than a mile of Noria Road north of Kansas Highway 10.

Part of the Noria Road project is in the Lawrence city limits. Negotiations are ongoing with the city of Lawrence for sharing the cost.

Hot-in-place recycling is an on-site, in-place method that rehabilitates certain types of deteriorating pavement, minimizing the use of new materials.

Commissioners meet at 9:30 a.m. in the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Mass.
