Kansas University sophomore Aqib Talib was named to the preseason All-Big 12 Conference football team, the league office announced Friday.

Talib, a cornerback, was one of four defensive backs on the list and the only Jayhawk to make the team. The 26-player list was voted on by members of the media that cover Big 12 football.

Of the 26 players honored, 14 came from the Big 12 North and 12 from the Big 12 South. Texas led the way with six selections, while Iowa State had five.

Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson was named the preseason offensive player of the year, while OU linebacker Rufus Alexander was defensive player of the year. Texas linebacker Sergio Kindle was named newcomer of the year.

Talib is the third selection the last two years from Kansas. Linebacker Nick Reid and cornerback Charles Gordon were preseason All-Big 12 selections in 2005.

Ashley waived: Former Kansas University defensive end Jermial Ashley was waived by the NFL’s Cleveland Browns on Friday, after signing as a free agent with the team May 8.

Cleveland still is home to several former Jayhawks, including linebackers David McMillan and Charlton Keith and receiver Brandon Rideau.
