Man arrested at border charged with molestation
San Diego ? A man arrested after returning from Mexico with a 5-year-old boy on his lap was indicted Friday by a federal grand jury on charges of kidnapping, child molestation and trafficking in child pornography.
Earl Venton Buchanan was arrested July 3 after authorities stopped his van at the Calexico border crossing and said they found a videotape of a boy being molested.
Buchanan, 62, pleaded not guilty to child pornography charges last week in federal court in El Centro. He faces a maximum penalty of life in prison if convicted of all charges. He was jailed pending a Tuesday arraignment.
Buchanan’s court-appointed attorney, Stephen Peterson, didn’t return a phone message Friday.
During a search of Buchanan’s home in Bloomington, 60 miles east of Los Angeles, authorities found a warehouse on the property with a room that contained toys and bunk beds as well as video equipment, said Michael Unzueta, special agent in charge of investigations at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in San Diego.
