A&E’s police academy not arresting

The primetime crime never stops. “Commander Castle” (9 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., A&E) may sound like a classy sequel to “Horatio Hornblower,” but it’s more in tune with A&E’s turn toward testosterone-enhanced reality fare.

“Castle” features Paul Castle, a gruff British “supercop” who works as a trainer and cheerleader for police forces. “Commander” follows the consultant as he travels from city to city conducting a weeklong boot camp, challenging cops who have grown soft, slow and less-than-prepared for deadly encounters with drug dealers, gangs and assorted ruffians.

If watching police officers do endless sit-ups is your idea of entertainment, then be my guest. The producers try to enhance the drama with scenes of Castle e-mailing his fiance, reading her poetry and discussing the ups and downs of relationships. This promises to be Castle’s third marriage.

Although Castle comes across as the toughest gym teacher on the planet, he does have his soft side. He’s protective of small creatures and escorts a helpless mouse out of a precinct house. And he gets a tad choked up addressing the graduates of his weeklong training camp. His voice quavering, he tells them he hopes their preparation will save their lives. He’s buried enough police comrades. “The next funeral I want to attend,” says Castle, “is my own.”
