Triathlon returning to Lone Star

The Midwest Mayhem Triathlon will be back this summer at Lone Star Lake.

Douglas County commissioners on Monday gave their blessing to the event, scheduled for July 22-23. More than 400 people are expected to participate, said Bill Marshall, president of KLM Marketing Solutions, which is organizing the event.

It will be second year in a row for this event. KLM has met with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Public Works Department to start preparing for it. Representatives with the two departments said there were no major concerns about the race returning this year.

“We’ve worked out a couple of details based on our experience last year,” Marshall said, adding that last year’s event went well.

KLM will be responsible for all signs, including those required to alert people ahead of time when the marina area will be closed or when access is restricted.

The county will be paid for the use of extra deputies. Triathlon participants will swim, bike and run more than 30 miles. A shorter sprint option will be available, and teams will be able to participate.

“It’s really popular to get teams in a short distance because not everybody likes to do the swim or the biking,” Marshall said.

The triathlon last year replaced the Lawrence Memorial Hospital Triathlon, held for seven years before it ended after 2002.

County commissioners will have their next meeting at 8:30 a.m. Monday in the Douglas County Courthouse. There will be no meeting Wednesday night.
