Eudora asks for support for turnpike interchange

The City of Eudora is asking the Douglas County Commission to express its support for a turnpike interchange near Tonganoxie.

City Administrator Cheryl Beatty will appear before the commission at its meeting this morning to make that request. Eudora passed its own resolution recently in support of the interchange, which has been proposed for Interstate 70 and Leavenworth County Road 1 north of Eudora.

The Leavenworth road connects to Douglas County Road 1061, which runs through Eudora to Kansas Highway 10. The city of Tonganoxie also supports the interchange. An interchange is expected to lead to commercial and residential development in the area and increase the tax base, city and Leavenworth County officials say.

“We hope that by forming a united front we will also have greater access to state and federal funding,” Eudora Mayor Tom Pyle wrote in a letter to Douglas County commissioners.

A resolution of support also has been passed by the Baldwin City Council.

Commissioners Monday also will tour the new storage facility at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds and the minimum security-work release area at the county jail.
