Florida ? The body of an 8-year-old autistic boy was found in a retaining pond across the street from his home Friday, one day after police launched a massive search for him.

Jared McGuire’s mother told authorities she had last seen him sleeping on the couch Thursday afternoon. After she reported him missing, police scoured the area with dogs and a helicopter. Authorities suspect the body sank and then resurfaced.

A deputy spotted Jared in the pond Friday. An autopsy was planned to determine the cause of death.

There were no obvious signs of trauma and the boy was fully clothed, said Greenacres Police Lt. Michael Porath. Authorities said the boy had severe autism.
