KU curator hit by car

A Kansas University library staff member was flown by air ambulance to a hospital Thursday morning after being struck by a car while walking in a crosswalk.

James Helyar, 74, graphics curator at the Spencer Research Library, was injured in the collision, which happened about 7:50 a.m. in the crosswalk east of the Campanile on the KU campus, said Capt. Schuyler Bailey of the KU Public Safety Office.

The car was going east and the driver, a 25-year-old male KU staff member identified as Thomas Ryan, told police he didn’t see Helyar because the sun was in his eyes, Bailey said.

A helicopter landed at Memorial Stadium and took Helyar to the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan.

A nursing supervisor said a condition report was unavailable Thursday night.
