Toxic levels of lead found in tourist trinkets

? Tourists who bought jewelry and tiny trinkets for children in a U.S. Capitol gift shop recently might have also picked up an unadvertised item: dangerous levels of lead, according to a report released Monday.

Officials pulled seven products, including bracelets, pendants and a souvenir spoon, from four gift shops last month. Test results showed that a silver Capitol bracelet contained 6,661 milligrams of lead – 641 times the limit accepted by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The products were selected because of their potential for ending up in the hands and mouths of children. Lead can cause learning disabilities, as well as growth and behavioral problems.
