Pitt, Jolie visit Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece
Mill Run, Pa. – Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie visited Fallingwater, Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural masterpiece, where they celebrated the actor’s upcoming birthday, Fallingwater’s curator of education said.
The unique home spans Mill Run, a creek that flows through woods about 50 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. Wright built the home for department store magnate Edgar Kaufmann Sr. in the 1930s. The American Institute of Architects voted it the “Building of the 20th Century.”
“Brad said he had wanted to experience Fallingwater ever since he took an architectural history course in college,” said curator Cara Armstrong. “He and I talked quite a bit about design and art. He was incredibly well-informed about architecture.”
Armstrong said she led Pitt and Jolie on a two-hour tour Thursday that was followed by a private birthday celebration for Pitt in Fallingwater’s living room. The actor will be 43 on Dec. 18.
Pitt’s new movie, “Babel,” from Paramount Vantage, is now in theaters. Jolie, 31, has been filming “A Mighty Heart,” based on a memoir written by Mariane Pearl, the widow of slain journalist Daniel Pearl.
Jolie’s new film, “The Good Shepherd,” will be released by Universal on Dec. 22.
Bridge player Buffett loses it all in charity poker tournament
Omaha, Neb. – It took less than 45 minutes for Warren Buffett, billionaire investor and avid bridge player, to go broke in a charity poker tournament.
“It’s different than bridge,” said Buffett, 76, the chairman and chief executive officer of Berkshire Hathaway Inc. “I was confused. I thought the low score won.”
He was among 50 amateur, celebrity and professional players who competed in a Texas Hold’em poker tournament Thursday night.
The tournament celebrated a recent $5 million renovation of retailer Borsheims, which is owned by Berkshire Hathaway.
Donations from the event benefited the Nebraska Make-a-Wish program.
The field of players included Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps and professional poker players David Williams, Evelyn Ng and Michael Mizrachi. They competed for a $3,500 watch featured in the new James Bond movie, “Casino Royale.”
An amateur player from Omaha won the watch.
Fraternity brothers want scenes removed from ‘Borat’
Hollywood – A Los Angeles judge took under submission Thursday a request by two University of South Carolina fraternity brothers who want their scenes removed from the blockbuster 20th Century Fox comedy “Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan,” starring Sacha Baron Cohen.
Superior Court Judge Joseph S. Biderman engaged both sides in extensive questioning on legal issues arising from the headline-grabbing lawsuit.
The plaintiffs claim the producers got them drunk before having them sign release forms and also assured them the film would be shown only in Kazakhstan. They want those scenes removed from the film and from the future DVD release of “Borat.”
In the film, the young men appear intoxicated while watching the infamous Pamela Anderson-Tommy Lee sex tape.
Attorney Louis P. Petrich, who represents Fox and the filmmakers, said, “We feel, without any doubt, they knew what they were doing, what they had bargained for.”
