Commission to discuss cell tower placement

A request from Verizon Wireless to place a cell phone tower and equipment shelter in southern Douglas County will be discussed during tonight’s County Commission meeting.

Verizon is asking for a conditional use permit for the tower to be built at 1271 N. 222 Road on property belonging to Ronald E. and Margaret E. Shouse.

Verizon wants the cell tower in order to increase coverage in the area of U.S. Highways 59 and 56. Some residents living in the area sent letters to the Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Commission earlier this year opposing the tower placement, mostly for aesthetic reasons.

The Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Office recommends approval of the permit, saying that all conditions have been met. A planning report suggests landscaping around the base of the tower to mitigate the presence of ground equipment.

Commissioners meet at 6:35 p.m. in the old courtroom on the second floor of the courthouse, 1100 Mass.
