COLUMBUS, OHIO When The Columbus Dispatch's respected poll recently reported that Republican Secretary of State Ken Blackwell was trailing Democratic Rep. Ted Strickland by 20 points in the race for governor of Ohio, there was dismay but no shock among his fellow Republicans. Those I interviewed during a recent visit here said they had seen it coming for a long time.
But it is a political earthquake. Democrats have not been able to win a single statewide office in Ohio for most of the past decade - and are completely shut out of power in the capitol at this moment. Strickland has never run a statewide campaign and is trying to break a tradition that has kept any congressman from ever being elected as governor of Ohio. Blackwell has won election in Ohio and led the successful campaign that gave George Bush this state - and the presidency - over John Kerry in 2004.
And yet, when the Dispatch poll came out, the best that Blackwell could say was that his own internal surveys showed him trailing by only 11 points - as if that were a consolation.
What I heard here - and in subsequent interviews at the National Governors Assn. convention in Charleston, S.C. - from one Republican after another signaled serious trouble for the GOP across a broad swath of states from Pennsylvania to Oklahoma in key midterm election contests for House, Senate and governor.
The impression these Republicans had is that support for GOP candidates had nose-dived this summer - in part because of the chaos conveyed by the daily televised scenes of destruction in Iraq and Lebanon and in part because of the dismal reputation built by the Republican Congress that is home to many of the endangered GOP candidates.
It may be that the cease-fire in the Israel-Lebanon war and the shift of focus to the terrorist plot thwarted last week by the British will change the political environment. But Republicans were deeply worried as August began.
I had dinner one night with a group of Ohio Republicans, all with many years of experience in state politics and none directly engaged in this year's gubernatorial race. One of them said, "I'm afraid this could be another 1982,'' a year when recession pushed unemployment to 15 percent and cost the Republicans the governorship. Another said, "I'd settle right now for another 1982. I'm afraid it will be another 1974,'' the year of the Watergate election when Democrats swept everything in sight.
Ohio may be particularly vulnerable because the economy in parts of the state where the auto industry remains vital has been hurt by layoffs, and because a series of scandals have left retiring Gov. Bob Taft with approval ratings in the teens. But similar concerns are voiced across the Midwest.
A leading Minnesota Republican told me that polls there show "the bottom has dropped out'' of Rep. Mark Kennedy's challenge to Hennepin County Atty. Amy Klobuchar, the Democratic candidate for an open Democratic Senate seat. Kennedy has company among the corps of Republican congressmen who thought this would be a good year to move up. In Wisconsin, Rep. Mark Green is lagging slightly behind Democratic Gov. Jim Doyle. In Oklahoma, Rep. Ernest Istook is far worse off in his challenge to Democratic Gov. Brad Henry. And in Iowa, Rep. Jim Nussle, the strong early favorite to capture the open governorship from the Democrats, now finds himself in a real battle with Democrat Chet Culver.
For all of them, service in this Congress has turned out to be a handicap, rather than a benefit, to their chances of advancement. The reason was explained in blunt terms by the Republican governor of one of the states where a congressman of his party is struggling for statewide office. "What has this Congress done that anyone should applaud?'' he asked scornfully. "Nothing on immigration, nothing on health care, nothing on energy - and nothing on the war. They deserve a good kick in the pants, and that's what they're going to get.''
That prediction is supported by the AP-Ipsos poll released last week. It showed a 33 percent job approval score for Bush and a 29 percent job approval score for the Republican Congress. On a test of voter preference for the midterm congressional election, Democrats had a staggering 18-point lead, 55 percent to 37 percent. You can see why Republicans are worried.

Let's remember how Karl Rove, Bush and his boys, the RNC and others smeared John McCain. Even loudmouthed Rush Limbaugh made fun of McCain, a true American hero. Now that he will probably be the front runner, the RNC and others are mumming up. Double Standard????? Typical.

Not to be condescending or anything, moneyshot, but I'm wondering how old you are. If you don't want to say that's fine but you seem a little inexperienced in terms of politics.

The DNC seems to be placing their bets on an anti-war platform, hence the dropping of Lieberman. Maybe they are trying to show that they are strong and of one mind in order to sway votes in November. The RNC has done the same in the past, so any finger pointing should be in the mirror on both sides.
Bottom line is that voters should vote for the candidate, regardless of what letter comes after their name (R),(D),(I). Too bad there are too many party line idiots in this country that can't see past red and blue.
And, not being from Lawrence, I'd like to know who Marci Fransisco is as well?

No I don't like what people call you either, Arminius. I think it takes away from the credibility and integrity of debate (although I've been guilty of name-manipulating as well. I try to avoid it).
Moneyshot I haven't heard of Selma, AL. Welcome to Lawrence, though. I miss living there but love coming to visit. Holygrailale appears to be one of the cornerstones, or pillars of the political clique. I've noticed a few cliques on these boards. The political side consists of almost constant debate with holygrailale, Arminius, conservativeman, meggers, staff04, xenophonschild, and just_another_bozo etc.
It does appear to be a little one-sided but from what I can tell, Arminius and C-man can hold their own.
The other clique is the community users. Marion, mommaeffortx2, those type of people that get in conversations and debates about local events. It doesn't get very heated, if at all, and is fairly moderate. Both cliques share users, many take part in both. I feel like I'm introducing the lunch tables from "Mean Girls."

Republicans may lose power, but will have as their consolation prize, a more accountable and better government
A proverbial win-win.

Arminius: On Judge Taylor: "Her reputation is for being a real by-the-books judge," said Evan H. Caminker, the dean of the University of Michigan Law School.
So, your comments against Taylor have nothing to do with the judge and her record, of which I am absolutely positive you know next to nothing. You are just aping what some Republican spin-myster has asked other Republicans to use as a "talking point." State the party line at all costs, rather than seek to find the truth. Sad. (I'm not saying whether or not Taylor is a good judge. I honestly don't know. I do know what she ruled in this case, which is obviously against invasion of privacy even if done by a President, and with that I agree.)
The quote at top is from the latest story in the New York Times. Go to their homepage to see how Bush is trying to fight the ruling against him and the current administration's invasion of public privacy if you wish to read more. I won't bother posting the link because I figure if someone really wants to read it, they will find it.
Kodiac (anonymous) says…
Arminius,
I went to read that list of "valid reason" of why we removed Saddam and as HGA says this is the last thing on the list...
"5. Controlling Iraq might create alternative bases for U.S. troops in the Middle East, allowing them to leave Saudi Arabia (and thereby meeting at least one of the radical Islamists' demands.)"
"Control Iraq"?????? So that is a "valid reason" to go in and conquer a country so that you can put your armies there huh?
Really Arminius, I do not think even President Bush would be foolish or dumb enough to give that as a "valid reason" to attack a country to remove a dictator.
Kodiac (anonymous) says…
Arminius,
"And Ferguson is far more intelligent than you."
And the "valid reason" for saying that was.....because it makes you feel better? makes you feel superior? make people think less of me?
'If it was not a valid rationale, please explain to us why our troops were removed from bases in Saudi Arabia just one month after the invasion."
So Arminius basically you are saying that it is valid to go in and "control" a country for the purpose of putting your own armies there. I see. Just wanted to clarify your position that is all.
beatrice (anonymous) says…
Arminus: I wasn't making a comment on the judge's decision, I was showing you that there are other accomplished and respected professors of law who feel that Taylor is highly respectable. This was to counter your use of the word "wacko" in your description.
As far as "the concensus" goes, might I ask you to look at blogs that don't all have pictures of Bush's butt with smoochy lip marks on them before you make that call. There are many who agree that invasion of privacy laws can't just be trampled because you sit in the Oval Office.
And of course it was appealed. Bush loves going through the court system whenever he doesn't get exactly what he wants. I mean, it got him in the White House to begin with, didn't it?

Do not underestimate the powers of Karl Rove and his acolytes. They are masters at mudslinging and making it stick. Rove is a Machiavellian genius, and I think he could still save the GOP using appeals to greed and fear (e.g. democrats are helping the terrorists and they want to take your money).
The current GOP strategists including Rove live only in the moment. They will say or do whatever is required at that moment to maintain GOP control. They understand that the American memory is short and, if things they say are remembered, are masters of deception, denial, and changing the subject (e.g. elevated terror alerts).
Again and again, they have used outright lies and character assassinations to achieve their political goals. I see no signs that these methods will not continue to work.

Maybe you disagree, but when you call people dolts and moonbats and make derogatory references to a person's intelligence which has nothing to do with the topic at hand, you are "spewing hate" and you come across as a "frustrated" individual. Your attempt to smear people with your namecalling and derogatory remarks make you look desparate, egotistical, small and petty.
I challenge you Arminius to stop using such hateful language and be respectful to other people's opinions even when you disagree with them. IMHO, people would respect you more and actually listen to what you are saying.
Tychoman (anonymous) says…
You're misinterpreting that quote. It's not my responsibility to police what b.s. you and holygrailale and xeno fling back and forth at each other. At least moron, idiot, and liar are better names than infantile, made-up names like "moonbat" which don't have any insulting value to begin with.

Good manners require that I not respond to unwarranted personal attacks, so I shall not.
John Kerry volunteered for military service; served honorably as an officer in a combat zone; was awarded medals for heroism by superior officers, and, reportedly, saved the life of one of his crewmen.
It could be construed as unseemly for anyone, particularly other military men who served in the same unit with Kerry, to dispute the judgement of their superior officers who awarded medals and citations to Kerry for valor.
If I'm not mistaken, this all occurred while a certain Texas Air National Guard lieutenant was on unspecified leave status, guzzling liquor in an Alabama hotel.

Perhaps the families of the 2600 dead in Iraq - and the families of the 13,000 seriously wounded - wish someone else had been elected.
John Kerry served honorably, got out of the military, and criticized the conduct of the war - which was his right, some might even contend his duty.
Bush did not serve honorably. The National Guard, seen then by many as the most respectable way to avoid Vietnam, had a huge waiting list - a year and a half in Texas, over 100,000 men nationwide. Yet, 12 days away from losing his student draft deferment, the senior Bush pulled strings and got Junior admitted to the Guard the same day he applied, regardless of any waiting list.
Eight weeks after joining the Guard, Bush was granted two (2) months leave to go to Florida and work on a political campaign, the senate race of Republican Ed Gurney.
As soon as Bush completed basic training, his commander approved him for a "direct appointment," which made him an officer without having to go through the usual (and difficult) Officer Candidate School. Tom Hail, a historian for the Texas Air National Guard, said when asked about Bush's direct appointment without special skills: "I've never heard of that. Generally they did that for doctors only, mostly because we needed extra flight surgeons."
Holygrailale has adequately covered Bush's career as a dilettante and imbiber in Alabama hotels, and his loss of flight status inre his refusal to submit to drug testing.
He did not serve honorably, and for his minions to attack someone who did should be regarded as offensive and deeply repugnant.

A valid question is, why - historically - do fascists immediately label all who disagree with them as communists?
Franco did so in Spain, and murdered tens of thousands while pursuing his vision of a Spanish Reich.
Mussolini did essentially the same in Italy, licking Hitler's boots in a vain attempt to reimpose the Roman imperium.
But why do American fascists - who pine for a total centralization of authority under a father figure/dictator; stringent socioeconomic controls that ensure only they and those like them reap any profit; suppression of any opposition through terror and censorship, and a domestic/foreign policy of bellicose nationalism and racism - routinely attack anyone who defends traditional American liberties and rights as communists?
I'd really like to know.

xenophonschild (anonymous) says…
American fascists - who sometimes label themselves "libertarian" - resolutely deny their predilictions toward dictatorship (Ronald Reagan was their icon), and routinely seek to deny rights and liberties to other Americans they "disapprove" of.
They are evil monsters, and hide behind the cloak of respectable Republicanism. But be not fooled; they are the enemy. If you stand for individual rights with individual responsibilities, and for limited but effective government, and are attacked as a "communist," then see your enemy for who and what he is.

BTW, a fundamental plank of the Democratic platform is and will continue to be fiscal responsibility.
You should note that it was under a Democratic administration that the federal budget was last balanced, and a federal budget surplus was achieved.
You should also note that the operating fiscal policy of "pay-as-you-go" was a Democratic nuance that was directly responsible for the balanced budget - and that, as soon as he took office, George Bush removed "pay-as-you-go" as the guiding policy in government spending.
It has been noted that some who post on this site allude to "socialist dictatorship" and related tripe in the event a fiscally-conservative Democrat is elected in '08.
Be advised: no reasonable, intelligent person can, or should, confuse a spendthrift who ruins our economy and international fiscal standing with a fiscally-responsible Democrat who will immediately re-instate "pay-as-you-go" as soon as she is inaugerated.
BTW, socialist dictators are rarely thought of as fiscally responsible.

It's people like you, Newman, full of your pompous BS about how only the GOP can like the U.S. and what it stands for, that make it so difficult to get through the day.
Liberals don't need counseling. The only socialist tyranny is in your head with all those voices whizzing around at once. I understand how it would be hard to concentrate, what with creating a liberal agenda in your head and all. Especially when there isn't one to begin with.
Now please, go away.

Voicing your opinion that liberals need counseling and the only true Americans are Republicans (apparently anyone who ISN'T one is a Communist and we all know how terrible that is) is incredibly offensive.
Please, go away. Jeez you make the GOP sound like a freaking cult. Which it just might be. Booster's right, your past actions prove that you deserve no such treatment that you're now begging for.

Why do fascists so readily, so quickly, leap to label as "communist" any who see them for the vile monsters they are?
Fascists long for rule by dictator (Reagan, Bush); stringent economic controls that deny opportunity to all but fascists and their ilk ("Kenny-Boy" Lay, Abramoff); suppression of opposition through terror and censorship (Ken Starr, the Republican National Committee, Tom (The Hammer) DeLay) and a bellicose domestic/foreign policy that is two parts nationalism for one part brash ignorance.
Fascists are the enemy. They are unAmerican; they hide under the aegis of the Republicans, but secretly feel Republicans (Kassebaum, Dole) are too moderate.
Fascists are the enemy. They are evil. They must be resisted; for now, through the advancement of the Democratic party, candidates, and agenda.

Now that is hilarious. I guess it isn't too weird when you look at it that way. It would seem that Mr. Conservativeman is trying to cover his own shortcomings by reverting to a different language.
Kind of reminds me of my Indian friend that would resort to calling attention to inanimate objects in the room to avoid talking about a mistake when he was confronted by the supervisor. I tried in vain to convince him that it was best just to admit making a mistake. But then he say, maybe I should start talking in a different language so I won't be that obvious. He was always cracking me up...

I have yet to see a "Where is Lee Harvey Oswald When You Need HIm" bumper sticker. These were sold by some of the right wing groups in the 1990's.

Another conservative gone. I don't know. This is starting to feel a little strange to me. I mean don't get me wrong, I am all for good discussions and not doing the namecalling but heck this is just a bit lopsided here. What is the deal? These guys have been around for long period of times and they certainly haven't acted any differently now then they did before. Did LJW get a new bouncer or something? What gives LJW?
Tychoman (anonymous) says…
Lay off, Newman.
Kodiac Cman was a troll. Each and every day he got more and more belligerent and hypocritical in his posts. It was impossible to have a debate with him anymore. Some conservatives are nice to debate with, but not with nutcases like him who were way beyond the lunatic fringe and wanted nothing more than to make our lives miserable.
It's not that LJW got a new bouncer, it's that they finally started cracking down.
ksmoderate (anonymous) says…
I'm with you scenebooster. The recent purges on these forums seem a bit overreactionary. After all, this is just the written word. It's not like we're in the same room together with a pile of AK-47s on the table.
Kodiac (anonymous) says…
Ok Tycho and HGA,
I can agree with all of that. I think I am just lamenting the loss of the far right conservative voice here. Maybe we never really had it here. I know there was alot of twisting of meanings and creative word usage and things like that and hopefully this increased awareness by LJW will help turn these type of discussions into more thought provoking and fruitful analysis. Most of the time, I do disagree with the more conservative factions but I do find some value in hearing what they have to say if only to just hear a different point of view. Sometimes (albeit rarely) I have found myself agreeing with conservatives on some concept or some idea. Hopefully this will not scare off other conservatives and get more of an enlightened discussion on different issues.
Tychoman (anonymous) says…
Fantastic. Can we get that on paper and signed in blood? :)
Tychoman (anonymous) says…
Oh great yet another person whining about "liberal meida bias" when there isn't one.
And, Kaliwa, a liberal poster WAS banned for less of an offense. So if you and your kind would stop complaining about the nonexistent liberal media bias, that would be fabulous. The LJW hasn't exhibited a bias against conservative posters. It's not the LJW's fault that the most inflammatory, offensive and hypocritical posters happen to have been of the far-right wing. I have noticed a trend of offensiveness on these panels and by far, the honor of most offenses goes to the right wing--although the battle does get rather close sometimes.
(By the way, everyone, my 6:24 post was referring to Hman's post.)
Tychoman (anonymous) says…
Racer, you're right. I did let myself get out of control in terms of my contempt for conservativeman and I am extremely grateful and frankly flattered that he lobbied for the return of the users banned last week. It's good to make fun of the system and it's also good to see a conservative-leaning satirist in addition to the others who knows how to push people's buttons and get under their skin. But my god it sometimes gets really old being called bad for America, communist, un-American, pro-terrorist person. I admit that I crossed the line a few times and it would get great if someone could admit that rightthinker and conservativeman also crossed the line, at least occasionally. I often laughed out loud at some of the jokes he made, most notably:
liberals: Let's solve this peacefully!
Hezbollah: *rockets*
In addition, bringing up a user's dead brother (which I admit I haven't seen but I'll take your word for it because I don't want to dig through 29394827 pages) is reprehensible and I don't condone everything that she or other users have done. Also I never knew of xenophonschild being banned and getting back on.
cman and rightthinker (or right_thinker) if/when you guys are back (duh right_thinker is back I know) please conduct yourselves with more reverence, dignity and humility in the future. I admit getting out of line on occasion but *sigh* I really also hate to admit that it might have been rash to boot you guys so soon, even though the communist tirade was really uncalled for.
Tychoman (anonymous) says…
Also Kaliwa I still don't agree with the liberal bias. It's just not apparent. The LJWorld prints columns and comics that they survey every reader with every couple of years to see what they want to read. And have you not noticed how the conservative columnists are the ones that stir up the most debate?
Just because Douglas County has more registered Republicans than LJWorld has more registered Democrats doesn't (and shouldn't) affect what the newspaper prints.

Calling people that are for same-sex marriage "insurgents" in a culture war. Comparing homosexuals to polygamists and claiming that homosexuals are deliberately trying to destroy the "glue" of traditional marriage that is apparently the only vital thing holding a civilization together. 6/9/06. That is CRAP.
And comparing certain members of the Democratic Party to the Taliban. Disgusting and reactionary. You want more?
You never questioned his legitimacy as president. You know why? Because he was fairly elected! He was the clear winner! Bush's contests were very tight and the 2000 election still has a fishy smell to it. Wow you must be Arminius. Where's swbsow when you need her?
xenophonschild (anonymous) says…
"Never questioned his legitimacy as president"
Hmm. I must've missed that . . . in the clamor of vituperation and lies Republicans raised even before he was inaugerated.
Once Richard Mellon Scaife paid his millions to the yellow journalists and the religious right to attack Clinton, starting a feeding frenzy of vicious stupidity - that included postings in Arkansas strip malls and trailer parks for any woman who had ever been sexually accosted by the then-president to call a toll-free number - that reached a high point when Newt Gingrich began his tirade and the Republicans took over Congress in 1994.
From that day on, all we hear from Republicans is relentless, nonproductive Democrat bashing, with special emphasis on dehumanizing and ridiculing William the Great, and now Hillary.
Does anyone remember the $70 million in taxpayer money the Republican Congress wasted investigating the Clintons? When the "investigation" finally limped to a close, without anything to smear the Clintons, did any Republican apologize to the President and his family, and the taxpayers whose money they wasted, for their mindless vitroil?
The pity is Republicans have to be tolerated in the electoral process. But not in November. The end for these mindless, yammering failures is finally in sight.
I wonder, with their control of Congress gone, and even their own ranks running away from the idiot Bush in droves, who will the Republicans seize on demonize? Hillary?

There are no true libertarians left. There can't be, unless they are the Amish, or a few Mennonites out in western Kansas who grow all their own food, use horses, and no electricity. We in the real world are all interconnected in ways that make the standard definition of "libertarian" obsolete.

But like the war in Iraq, the "insurgents" in the culture wars believe all they must do is hang on long enough and the majority will surrender because protracted warfare interferes with our pursuit of pleasure and material consumption."
Journal World 6/9/06. THERE. Jeez I really need to spell it out for you.

You then compounded your error by citing another right-wing blog, a David Horowitz piece no less (who I also edit) which does nothing but rant about Clinton and the Chinese . . . with not a shred of substance or proof.
You did have the decency to put wikipedia first but, as usual, you failed to note the report of the U.S. Senate Investigation of Illegal or Improper Activity in Connection with 1996 Federal Election Campaigns, to wit: "While a number of convictions came against long-time Clinton-Gore friends and political appointees," no action was recommended or taken against William the Great or Gore.

I don't see why people like you insist on comparing gay marriage to polygamy. Polygamy is purely based on religion. No, I don't think someone should be able to take multiple wives (or multiple husbands to balance it out) in a legal sense, but if it's part of their religion, big deal.

Your 9:26 post was excellent.
It may be that the reason conservative Republicans crave to interact with us is that they, secretly, want to be normal Americans again.
There was a time when you could actually have genuine, honest debates with Republicans, times when they acted like human beings, like regular citizens - a time when they did not mindlessly bash Democrats as being worse than terrorists on the TV news.
Maybe some of them are - quietly - beginning to see the truth. Their adoration and protection of George Bush, no matter how offensive his policies, has not prevented the Chief Cowboy Idiot from disregarding the Constitution and the rule of law, running up a nine-trillion dollar national debt, getting us mired in an illegal, unnecessary war in Iraq, spying on American citizens, and insulting and belittling - and groping - our allies around the world.
Maybe it's the huge extension of the power and scope of the federal government - the antithesis of traditional Republicanism - that is causing the trogs to want to share their thoughts and reservations with us.
Who knows? All we can do is put out the welcome mat and do our best to elucidate why Democratic positions and strategies are the best to meet the challenges of both the present and future.

Kaliwa,
I re-read the article. And while your plain statement that polygamists do not have to be religious is true, the point is made that they don't HAVE to be religious. But are there any people like that?
The article names Mormons, Africans (only the "primitive" ones), and some Arabs. I don't know, so I wonder if all of those folks named view polygamy as a God-given right and mandate (like some Mormons)?
And to answer your last question about men and women being prohibited from marrying more than one person at a time: I, personally, don't care. I wouldn't do it myself. I don't think the government has any business regulating it, either.
One point Krauthammer failed to grasp in his article was about the difference between being a polygamist and being gay. He cited a person who correctly states that people choose to be polygamists, while people DON'T choose to be gay. They either are gay or they aren't...hence, it is not a choice. Being a polygamist is a choice. Krauthammer devolved the argument down to love, which isn't relevant to that person's point.
Thoughts? Discuss.

Well, you must've missed last nights' ABC News special, "Out of Control: AIDS in Black America."
http://abcnews.go.com/Primetime/story...
I thought the program was well-researched and well-presented. They started out with some statistics (AIDS has been the leading cause of death for black women age 25-44 for the past 11 YEARS!)... and then went through four or five reasons why this epidemic has raged, unchecked.
One of the things they talked about was the dearth of black men. A lot of black male babies just don't make it to adulthood, for a variety of reasons. One of the comments made something like, "When a black man moves into a community--I mean a black man who's educated, makes good money, has never been to prison--he'll immediately have five, six women knocking at his door."
Because they know there's a scarcity of men, the women don't mind sharing. Black men are far more likely to have multiple sex partners than their white counterparts. On top of that, there's a little-known, little-discussed population of bisexual men (slang for a bi man is to say that he's "on the down low"). These men have sex with each other, at the same time that they're having relations with these multiple women! Furthermore...
1) The women do NOT even want to KNOW if their man is "on the down low"
2) The sex is generally unprotected
Hence, you have an AIDS epidemic.
Point I'm trying to make here, I guess:
* Modern black America = multiple sex partners
* Polygamy = multiple sex partners after a marriage ceremony

"What if some people are born with a polygamy gene? Is polygamy then a choice?"
Is everyone on the same page here. I thought we were talking about social polygamy as opposed to sexual polygamy. Biologically speaking, sexual monogomy is very rare in animal populations. Humans were not built to be monogamous organisms and very likely had to be polygamous very early in their history evolutionary speaking. I think most studies show sexual monogamy to be very rare in human populations even today. But it seems like to me even the author is confusing the issue of choice with a social concept (polygamy) and a biological concept (homosexuality). I mean when you really think about it, there are not many humans who can truly claim to be sexually monogamous in their entire lifetime. However from a social standoint, many humans could claim to be socially monogamous and say they chose to be. Homosexuality though is not a social choice but a biological reality. I mean after all given our current cultural and social mindset, would you choose to be gay?

"So if same-sex marriage is allowed, why shouldn't polygamy be allowed? "
This statement is confusing to me because the word polygamy is undefined. That government, as far as I know, does not have laws against having multiple sex partners. How is same-sex marriage the same as polygamy? Do you mean like a polygamous-sex marriage? Secular law in most western countries with large Jewish and Christian populations does not recognize polygamous marriages. However, few such countries have any laws against living a polygamous lifestyle: they simply refuse to give it any official recognition.

Is this turning into a debate? You believe I have gone way off topic...Your statement was to blame the current administration on going to war...My point of view is that it took congress to approve the war...Congress is made up of both Republican's and Democrats...the committee that was formed was formed from both sides and the information gathered for the decision was not gathered by just the Republicans or just the Democrats...it was a mutual decision on the information gathered by Republicans AND Democrats...

In presenting the award to the primary cause for Republican disquiet, Goodman noted: "Alas, America is not immune to international guy gaffes. The Man-Handling Prize for groping across borders goes to The Decider, who came up behind Angela Merkel's back and gave the horrified German chancellor a hefty massage. This "Love Attack," as it was described in Germany, proves that no woman is too powerful to get George as her main squeeze."

Well-stated swbsow. I agree that all of these types of marriages are different and I also think they should all be officially "legal" if everyone involved consent to any of those type of arrangements.
I am not sure why Kaliwa is focussing on this issue or where he is going with all of this. I see many trying to show certain types of arrangements can result in some form of abuse not seen in other arrangements. While different arrangements might see different types of abuses given their unique situation, all arrangements have the potential of abuse none of which are "worse" than the other. Of course we have all observed many people criticizing certain types of arrangements as being harmful to the family unit or will be traumatic to children or cause some kind of "degradation" to social morals which has no evidential basis and to me is just simply a prejudiced, discriminatory viewpoint with no validity whatsoever. So I think it is illogical and wrong to declare one type of arrangement to be better than another one based on such opinions or differences between these arrangements.
So Kaliwa from your concerns, I think you should start a grass roots campain to call for the legalization of all types of arrangements and that anything short of that is discriminatory to those not legalized. And as swbsow pointed out, legalization would give protection to everyone as well as reduce the financial burden for all. I look forward to your new website Kaliwa that will help support such foward thinking intiatives...

Kaliwa,
"Then you have a consistent argument and, at the same time, have made Cal Thomas' point."
Again I ask what is this point of Thomas's that sbwsow is making? Are you referring to this statement of Cal's:
"If same-sex marriage is allowed, it is going to be nearly impossible to prohibit the sanctioning of any other kind of human "relationship" - from close relatives of different sexes who wish to marry (that has been outlawed because of biological and incest considerations) and polygamists to adult-child "marriage."
This of course has nothing to do with sbwsow's argument and is complete hogwash. If you follow that line of reasoning, then heterosexual marriage should not prohibit the sanctioning of any other kind of relationship as well. Do you really think that same-sex marriage will result in legalization of incest? As I said, comlete nonsense.
Obviously, I am not quite sure I understand how sbwsow's argument is consistent with Cal Thomas's point. The whole point of Thomas's article was that he felt like marriage between a man and a woman is based on biblical teachings which he is calling the "objective truth". He even goes as far as to assert that if there was no God, then there would be no reason to have morality. Ethical behaviours or principles have and do exist outside of religion which are not bound by any kind of faith doctrine. Do you really think that those types of beliefs have the moral compulsion of a "bowl of cereal" as Thomas says because God in not part of them. Cal also says that marriage started with the bible with Genesis references and he says "At least we heterosexuals have a reference that is thousands of years old." Virtually every society has some form of marriage which most have or had no biblical reference for its existence. I think Cal Thomas is being intolerant and dogmatic here and trying to push his version of the "truth" onto others. I do not see how this "point" is "consistent" with any of sbwsow's arguments.
Maybe you could give us a clarification of what you were trying to say Kaliwa.

The essence of Bush/Cheney/assorted idiots' primary error is that they foolishly, knowingly, invaded Iraq . . . when there was no compelling reason to do so. Instead of focusing efforts on Afghanistan, and reinforcing ties with Muslim governments and societies around the world, your brash ignoramuses have:
* emperiled our status as a superpower, at a time when our ability to use that status is absolutely critical.
* emperiled our economy - trillions in debt, an out-of-control balance of payments deficit, out-of-control federal spending. Without a strong economy, free of massive debt, we cannot long maintain superpower status.
* divided the country with their clandestine, secretive approaches to national security. Why not make the American people their allies - as it should be - instead of potential enemies?
* undermined hallowed Constitutional priniciples with illegal "signing statements" that arbitrarily seize power to the executive branch - of course, the Congress is only too willing to close their eyes and go to sleep while their president ruins the country
* has actively discouraged science and scientific research, for a number of political, ideological reasons that leaves us at risk of losing our technological lead over emerging countries
