Olive Gallery offering classes, workshops

Olive The Above Art Academy kicks off in May with a series of classes running through the end of June. Enrollment for classes has begun and ends May 6.

Classes include Fiber Forms, Basic Drawing 101, Artist Book and Screen Printing.

One-day workshop enrollment has begun as well. Registration for those programs is due the Wednesday before the workshop: Knitting the Impossible, May 13; Applique Crazy, May 27; Papermaking, June 3; Solve It with Solvy, June 10; Make Your Own Portfolio, June 17; and Dream It, Design It and Bind It, June 24.

Baker receives $1,000 to fund exhibit

Baker University has received $1,000 from Wal-Mart, 3300 Iowa, to fund an exhibit from painter Jacob Lawrence’s “Legends of John Brown” series.

The series, which opens May 22 at Holt-Russell Gallery, will be on exhibit June 2-3 in conjunction with the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Black Jack.

Civic choir announces concert date

The Lawrence Civic Choir will present the “Brahms Requiem” at 8 p.m. Saturday at Free State High School.

The performances will be sung in English with four-hand piano accompaniment.

Tickets are $10 for general admission, $8 for students and seniors and $5 for children under 12. They may be purchased at the Lawrence Arts Center, 940 N.H., or at the door.

The concert will be repeated at 7:30 p.m. May 1 at Grace Episcopal Cathedral in Topeka. Tickets will not be sold for this concert, but there will be a free-will offering.
