Wal-Mart announces grand opening of recycling center
Wal-Mart today announced the grand opening of its new and improved Community Recycling Center at its south Lawrence store.
The center, at 3300 Iowa St., is open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
The center, which was expanded last year, had a “soft opening” in December after being closed for six months for the expansion project.
Wal-Mart works with the Community Living Opportunities Inc., to staff the center. Currently, eight people with severe developmental disabilities work at the center with on-site job coaches.
The center recycles cardboard, paper, glass bottles, aluminum cans, plastic bottles and milk jugs, newspapers, magazines and old food cans.
Last year the center recycled more than 3,080 tons of paper, plastic metal and glass, according to the company.
