Easter the theme of TV this weekend

Easter weekend abounds with religious-themed programming. “The Ten Commandments” (6 p.m. today, ABC) airs as it has for decades. Director Cecil B. DeMille’s star-studded production turns 50 this year.

“The Last Days of Pope John Paul II” (6 p.m. today, CNN) touches on the pope’s final appearance last Easter, when he tried in vain to address the gathered faithful outside his window. The special report interviews many of his most intimate friends from Poland and the Vatican as well as correspondents who covered his three-decade papacy. Details of the papal succession emerge, including the technical glitches and human errors that prevented vital signals, including white smoke and ringing bells, from alerting the world of the election of a new pope.

A number of PBS stations will be airing “Billy Graham: God’s Ambassador” over the weekend.

James Caviezel stars in the 2004 epic “The Passion of the Christ” (8 p.m. today, Showtime). While many considered this film, produced by Mel Gibson, to be an inspirational depiction of Christ’s torment and suffering, others saw it as an exercise in cinematic brutality. Controversy helped propel “The Passion” to record-breaking box-office returns.

“God or the Girl” (8 p.m. Sunday, A&E) follows four young men at a personal and spiritual crossroads, as they try to decide whether their desire to join the Roman Catholic priesthood is stronger than their need to date and marry women and possibly raise families. The five-hour documentary airs in two-hour blocks Sunday and Monday, with a concluding hour April 23.
