Emporia man killed by train in Edgerton

A 23-year-old man was killed early this morning when he was struck by a train in Edgerton, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s office.

Jeff Morgan, Emporia, was killed as he walked along the tracks, officials said.

Sheriff’s officers said they were dispatched at 2:18 a.m. today to investigate a person on the railroad tracks at 199th Street just south of U.S. Highway 56 in Edgerton.

Deputies said when they arrived they discovered the man had been struck by a train and killed.

“Detectives are continuing to investigate why this man was on the railroad tracks however they do not believe foul play was involved,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.

A man walking along train tracks early Thursday was hit and killed by a train, officials said.

Jeff Morgan, 23, of Emporia, was killed in southern Johnson County near the town of Edgerton.

Deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department were called to railroad tracks near Highway 56 at about 2 a.m. to investigate a man walking along the tracks. They found Morgan’s body nearby.

Officials are investigating why Morgan was walking along the tracks. They do not suspect foul play.

Morgan was well-known in Emporia as a cancer survivor who wrestled for his high school team. After undergoing surgery and chemotherapy, he received a college scholarship from the American Cancer Society.

He was declared disease-free in May 2001, and after playing football at Baker University, began running a club called JMo’s Place with his mother, Joy Morgan.
