Comments on trafficway to be taken through May

Federal highway authorities are now accepting comments from area residents on where the final leg of the South Lawrence Trafficway should be built.

The Federal Highway Administration has announced it intends to adopt a study done by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers that approved a 32nd Street route through the Baker Wetlands.

Officials will accept written public comments on the route issue through May 31. Copies of the Corps of Engineers report are available for review at several locations, including:

¢ Haskell Indian Nations University Library, Tommaney Hall;

¢ Anschutz Library on the Kansas University campus;

¢ Douglas County Public Works Department, 1242 Mass.

¢ Lawrence Public Library, 707 Vt.;

¢ Lawrence-Douglas County Planning Office, 6 East Sixth St.;

¢ Baker University Collins Library, 606 Eighth St., Baldwin.

A CD of the corps study also is available by contacting the Kansas Department of Transportation at (785) 296-3901.

To submit comments to the Federal Highway Administration, write to: Wendall Meyer, Assistant Division Administrator, FHWA Kansas Division Office, 6111 S.W. 29th St., Topeka, 66614.

The FHA is expected to make a final decision on the route by Spring 2007. The trafficway must receive FHA approval before federal funds can be used to build the road.
