Football facility plans to be revealed soon

Get the eyeballs ready.

In roughly three or four weeks, Kansas University athletic administrators anticipate some sort of visual rendering of the Anderson Family Football Complex to be made public.

It doesn’t mean that one has been put together privately. But HNTB Architecture and KU officials are churning away at it.

“Today it looked like a rectangle. Yesterday it looked like a triangle,” associate athletic director Sean Lester quipped Tuesday. “We had a meeting this morning. We’re narrowing in on the design that we like, the flow of the building, the weight room, locker room. (HNTB) will come back in another two weeks with more information.”

Funding officially was secured for the $31 million facility in February, behind donations from the Anderson and Kivisto families, among others.

Since then, KU officials have been clearing political hurdles to get the project started before moving into programming stages. That involved setting up a schedule and determining what the complex would consist of, such as meeting rooms, practice fields and other amenities.

“Really,” Lester said, “it hasn’t changed from what we originally said.”

Other details were cleaned up, including the selection of Turner Construction to be the contractor of the project. In addition, HNTB conducted interviews with several KU officials, including coach Mark Mangino and athletic director Lew Perkins, to get a better understanding of what they want from the complex.

Now, they’re figuring out how they want the complex put together. Lester hinted that part of the facility could be underground, but didn’t divulge many other details, mainly because not many are known for sure.

The time frame remains the same. Behind-the-scenes work will continue until groundbreaking takes place early next year.

“We are right on schedule,” Lester said. “The very first meeting was to determine the schedule. You back into it from when you want to move in.

“We want to move into it in July of ’08, which we’ve always said.”
