This Weekend’s Highlights

Particle

Particle

Particle brought its “funktronic” sound to masses via the Coachella and Bonnaroo Festivals, as well as its own “Krewe of Particle People” event in New Orleans. The band’s disco and funk-heavy sets serve up prime boogie-down real estate, synthesizing a swirling tornado of trippy visuals and jazz fusion. Opener Gabby La La is the newest protege of Les Claypool, an eccentric female vocalist who plays sitar, ukulele and accordion. The acts appear at 9 p.m. Sunday at The Granada, 1020 Mass.

El Salvador

At the heart of El Salvador is Nick Krautter, a man who has lived life much like he reads magazines, from the back cover to the front – always backward. Driven by ambition and the energy of San Francisco, Krautter quit a thankless radio gig, moved out of his apartment and took residence on a tiny sailboat. Here he wote the songs that would appear on his band’s self-titled debut, which he recorded in only three days and after only two rehearsals. El Salvador joins Cameron McGill at 10 p.m. Sunday at The Replay Lounge, 946 Mass.

Anvil Chorus

Anvil Chorus

Anvil Chorus formed on a whim when four Kansas City music scene veterans pulled names out of a hat at a “band scramble” event. One lineup change later, the unit began developing its reputation for lush art-rock in the vein of Blonde Redhead, Mogwai and Portishead. Seductively nuanced lead vocalist Anna Cole (ex-Trophy Wives) heads up the group, which will celebrate its debut CD with support from Lawrence’s Hello Superworld, a Polyphonic Spree-esque collective headed up by former Danger Bob frontman Andy Morton. The bands perform at 9 p.m. Saturday at The Bottleneck, 737 N.H.

‘Pretty Dirty’

'Pretty Dirty'

“If I really had to describe my work, I suppose I would say that a vast majority of it looks as though it recently got pulled out of a Dumpster and thrown down to soak up the filth of a back alley,” says Lawrence artist Nathan Rightmeier, aka n8. Some of you may know him for his T-shirts and other merchandise sold at Lawrence stores. He majored in illustration at Kansas University, and his cartoon, “N8-Ville,” runs in The Lawrencian. “The works in this exhibition seem to be a strange hodgepodge of goofy do-it-yourself interior design and garbage from your trash can,” he says. “I

sincerely hope that you enjoy it.” “Pretty Dirty” opens with a reception from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at Olive Gallery and Art Supply, 15 E. Eighth St.

Doug Coffin at Fields Gallery

Doug Coffin at Fields Gallery

Abiquiu, N.M., artist Doug Coffin grew up in Lawrence, and he’s returning to his boyhood home with a new exhibition of paintings at Fields Gallery that are both a departure from and an extension of his sculptural work. Hands are a prevalent symbol in these pieces, as well as totemic elements, vibrant color fields and simple shapes. Coffin draws both from his Potawatomi/Creek heritage and the modern world, combining symbol, fetish and form to tell a story steeped in tradition and rich with connectedness. An opening reception for his work will be from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday at Fields, 712 Mass.
