Arkansas City man dies from explosive in Iraq

? A soldier from Arkansas City has died of injuries he suffered in an explosion, military officials said Friday.

Sgt. Evan S. Parker, 25, was wounded Sunday in Balad, Iraq, when enemy forces threw an explosive from a moving vehicle at his patrol. He died Wednesday at Landstuhl Army Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, according to the Defense Department.

Parker was assigned to the Army Reserve’s 1st Battalion, 487th Field Artillery Regiment, 20th Brigade Combat Team, Honolulu.

A funeral was expected to be held next week at South Haven High School, school officials said. Parker graduated from the south-central Kansas school in 1998.

Track and football coach David Hughes recalled Parker as “fun-loving” and “very outgoing.” He said Hughes was hard on himself when things didn’t go well.

“But he always came back and rebounded,” Hughes said.
