Officials announce three bodies found in Boardwalk fire

Three bodies have been recovered from the ruins of an apartment building that burned early Friday in northwestern Lawrence.

The bodies were found Sunday afternoon by investigators combing through the ruins in the 500 block of Fireside Drive in the Boardwalk Apartments complex, Mark Bradford, interim chief of Lawrence-Douglas County Fire & Medical, said during a news conference this afternoon.

No identification of the bodies have been made and Bradford declined to speculate who they might have been. The Douglas County coroner is examining the bodies and will attempt to determine their identities and the cause of their deaths. That could take several days, Bradford said.

“The three occupants that we were looking for, we believe have, in fact, been found,” Bradford said. The victims’ names will be released once they have been positively identified and the families of the victims have been notified.

Three people have been missing since the fire, Bradford said, but he has repeatedly declined to identify the missing. He did say today, however, that investigators don’t expect to find more bodies.

During a news conference Sunday afternoon, Bradford had said one body had been recovered along with a second set of remains. At that time he didn’t know whether they were human remains. The coroner has since confirmed that they were human remains, he said today. Before the search ended Sunday evening a third body was found, he said.
