Rape suspect faces 55 felony charges

? A 28-year-old man already charged with raping three women has been charged with five other attacks.

The 35 counts a grand jury added Friday bring to 55 the total number of charges filed against Kevin L. Hayslett of Kansas City, Mo. The latest charges, which include five counts of robbery, four counts of rape and one count of first-degree assault, stem from attacks committed between 2001 and 2003.

Jackson County prosecutor Mike Sanders said the attacks were becoming progressively more violent.

“At his (young) age, it’s important,” Sanders said. “If he’s convicted, 55 counts will ensure that he will never get out of prison.”

Detectives began to suspect a serial rapist in 2003 because of similarities in the attacks. Many of the victims reported that their attacker carried a gun, drove a white sports utility vehicle and used the name Tony.

Three of the attacks occurred in 2001, one in 2002 and four in 2003. The victims’ ages ranged from 18 to 47.

Detective Steve Wells said Hayslett became a suspect after a victim gave police a license number from a white SUV, which officers discovered was registered to Hayslett’s father. Police then began checking DNA from other sex crimes.

According to police reports, one of the latest charges stems from an attack that happened after the victim stopped to help a man whose car stalled.
