This Weekend’s Highlights

Fast Food Junkies

Fast Food Junkies

Fast Food Junkies are a band of reformed Kansas metalheads who turned to the gospel of bluegrass. Fans of Split Lip Rayfield should warm to the trio’s sadistic-yet-schooled take on Appalachian folk traditions. The act shouts out Hank Williams, Old Crow Medicine Show and Primus in equal measure, creating a string-band maelstrom with plenty of punk-rock attitude. Fast Food Junkies join Et Tu, Brute? at 9 p.m. Saturday at The Granada, 1020 Mass.

Suffrajett

When your guitarist screams this ain’t “no jingle-jangle (expletive)” and your leading lady proclaims, “Uh oh, I got no pants on,” you know you’re in for a show. NYC band Suffrajett brings talent and hype in equal measure, striking a balance between sexually charged glam and catchy, radio-friendly rock and roll. Frontwoman Simi is a bona fide rock star backed by a cast that includes former Psychedelic Furs and Liz Phair band members. Suffrajet plays a free show at 10 p.m. Sunday at The Bottleneck, 737 N.H.

Early Man

Early Man

Early Man started as a recording outlet for guitarist/vocalist Mike Conte seven years ago when he moved from Columbus, Ohio, to New York City. Armed with a four-track, a ’73 Gibson SG that was a gift from his ex-girlfriend, a drum machine and a bad attitude, Conte began recording the earliest of Early Man jams. He continued to refine the sound of the project until drummer Adam Bennati came onboard. Now sporting the same sparse instrumentation as The White Stripes, the duo delivers Sabbath-style grooves with more indie-friendly vocals. Early Man joins Filthy Jim at 10 p.m. today at The Jackpot Saloon, 943 Mass.

Festival of Trees

Festival of Trees

Each year, benevolent and creative Lawrence businesses and individuals deck Liberty Hall for a good cause. This year is no exception. The Festival of Trees opens Monday and remains on view through Thursday. The annual event features Christmas trees – mostly of the evergreen variety, although more unconventional materials have been used – that are decorated in schemes from traditional to high-tech and then auctioned off to benefit at-risk children served by The Shelter Inc. Doors open for the auction at 7 p.m. Tuesday, with bidding kicking off at 8 p.m. at Liberty Hall, 642 Mass. Tickets are $25; viewing the trees during the week will run you $2.

Sweet Treats Exchange

Sweet Treats Exchange

The holiday season has begun in earnest, and even folks who steer clear of the kitchen the rest of the year are starting to pull out favorite family recipes for popcorn balls, festive breads and candy of all kinds. The Watkins Community Museum of History wants to capitalize on the sweet spirit with an evening built around family, fellowship and – best of all – treats. Local musicians will play live music as museum visitors swap their best-loved holiday munchies. The Sweet Treats Exchange runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at the museum, 1047 Mass. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted.
