Finding a way home

Their faces come in all colors.

Some are wearing big gap-toothed smiles. Others have timid smirks.

Some have freckles. Others have glasses. Their interests range from athletics to books to music.

The one common thread: They’re all looking for “forever families.”

The faces belong to 47 of the 600 Kansas children awaiting adoption. They’re featured in the second annual Klicks for Kids project, a photographic exhibit touring the state during November for National Adoption Month.

The photos will be at the Lawrence Public Library gallery, 707 Vt., today through Nov. 29.

The project’s goal is to raise awareness for adoption issues. Last year, 10 of the 40 children featured were adopted, and the Kansas Children’s Service League says it fielded hundreds of phone calls from people who saw the show.

Professional photographers from throughout the state – including Lawrencians John Gladman and Dwight Hilpman – took the portraits. Some of them will be forwarded to a national exhibit in Washington, D.C.
