‘Saw II’ hacks through box office

With last year’s “Saw” being an unexpected box-office draw, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Lions Gate’s sequel, “Saw II,” took the top spot in its first weekend of release. Jigsaw’s grizzly game took in an estimated $30.5 million for the three-day period ending Sunday.

This is enough for the film to pass 2000’s “Meet the Parents” and become October’s fifth-best opener ever, behind “Scary Movie 3,” “Shark Tale,” “The Grudge” and “Red Dragon.”

Two other new releases, “The Legend of Zorro” and “Prime,” made up the box office’s top three with $16.5 million and $6.4 million, respectively. “Dreamer” ($6.3 million) and “Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit” ($4.4 million) rounded out the top five.

The final wide release of the week, Nicolas Cage’s “The Weather Man,” came in at No. 6 with $4.2 million.

Last week’s box office winner, “Doom,” had the biggest tumble on the chart, losing 74 percent in its second week of release and adding a mere $4.1 million to its gross, totaling $22.9 million so far.
